Turn Bale Twine into Treasure for National Ag Day

Residents across NSW are being challenged to transform something often overlooked on farms into works of art, practical creations and community treasures.

The Australian Agricultural Centre has launched the National Ag Day Bale Twine Repurposing Challenge, encouraging schools, families, farmers, community groups and makers to collect used bale twine and give it a new purpose instead of leaving it in paddocks or sending it to landfill.

Held as part of National Agriculture Day on Friday, 20 November 2026, the event celebrates this year's theme, "Stand with the Land," while highlighting how simple actions can help protect our environment.

Participants can create their projects before the event or join the community maker day, where instructors from Sunnydaze Textiles and the Pejar Local Aboriginal Land Council will guide participants through weaving techniques and cultural storytelling.

Creative entries might include woven mats, baskets, garden art, sculptures, practical farm items, animal feeders or completely original ideas.

The event also supports STEM education by introducing participants to environmental science, materials science, engineering and circular economy principles through hands-on learning.

Winning entries will be displayed in a travelling exhibition throughout the region, giving the wider community an opportunity to celebrate local creativity and innovation.

Community members are also encouraged to donate clean used bale twine at collection points located at:
